it’s begun . . .

Published by Mintyfresh at 9:57 pm under sweaters

Yes. I was up way too late last night obsessing over that yoked pullover of Hermione’s. I spent a lot of time looking at some of the great links people provided and researching yarn, again beginning with a suggestion from the comments. After dinner tonight, I broke out the colored pencils.

And I started charting the colorwork. I’ve since moved to Excel, where I can copy, paste, and see the repeat quickly. Only once I swatch will I really get a feel for how this will look. And I can’t swatch until I get some yarn, right?

My current choice for yarn is Karabella Aurora 4–from the name alone it’s appropriately Harry Potterish. I will try to find the time to get over to School Products (home of Karabella) this week to look at the yarn and think about colors (do I go with Hermione’s brown and tan? Or brown and something else? The white is most definitely my favorite part, so that stays). I expect to be knee-deep in this one by the weekend, if possible!

I plan to provide this pattern when it’s ready, if it works. (Likely for a small fee.)

It’s the birth of the Auror Pullover.

Fantastic! I loved the look of that pullover, too, it was one of my favourite pieces from the film. I once had grand plans to reverse-engineer her turtleneck from GoF, but alas never got around to it.

This is going to be so great. I can’t wait to see it!

Far be it from me to tell you what to do with your own Intellectual Property, but perhaps you should consider submitting it for publication to Knitty or Magknits. Just a consideration.

Despite being a huge HP fan I wasn’t planning to go see the movie anytime soon until I saw the sweater in your last post! Now, I’m dieing to see it in action. I’m excited to see that you’re taking this project on, and will be cheering for you the whole way. I’m also thrilled that you’ll be the one writing the pattern because I’ve always found your patterns to be very well-written and full of handy tips.

This will be fun to see! And what a great name :)

fabulous, can’t wait to see what you come with, good luck!

Ooo yeah! I like the brown and tan or even moving into more of a pinky tan color.

You go! I am impressed with how sharp your pencils are. Did you buy a new box especially?

I love how inspired you are and how you’re so motivated to go go go and start already. I’ll be watching to see how the process goes for you.

    Go girl!!

    YAY! How fun.

Choose your favourite colours. Brown, orange and blue. Stick with what you know you love.

Wow, such ambition! I’m looking forward to the FO. But I have a question: how does one chart in Excel?

  13. wendeeon 16 Jul 2007 at 2:40 am

Can’t wait for you to show this off. I don’t have any history with Aurora 4, however Aurora 8 is my all time favorite yarn. If the dk weight has a similar spin, this sweater will be heaven!

After spending a whole day making charts for a simple little k-p pattern (a hat pattern for the yarn shop where I work - the pattern repeat changes for each size of hat, 4 total) I must say I’m a bit bummed I chose to do it on paper rather than excel. Good idea.

I can’t wait to see it finished. I thought of making one myself but seeing as how I’ve never knit a sweater before I’ll just wait and see how yours works out.

Ah, the sweater obsession has begun. Go for it girl!

I am looking forward to seeing this process! I haven’t seen the movie yet, but will certainly keep an eye out. Have fun!!

I am so darn excited about seeing this! Love the whole Aurora/Auror connection :)

  18. Deeon 16 Jul 2007 at 10:08 am

How about some ice blue in there?

  19. Stellaon 16 Jul 2007 at 2:59 pm

I am SO excited to watch this come together. One of the things I like best about that sweater is the way it uses several shades of similar hues. Wouldn’t have to be browns, necessarily, but I do love them — so warm! I could see it in shades of red, too.

    Perfect name, btw.

oh, my god! i freaking love this idea. a small (okay, fine, huge) part of me desperately wants to be Hermione. Also Aurora 4 is one of my all-time favorite yarns. (I think it’s got even better spin than Aurora 8, if that’s possible.)

anyway, i’ll be anxiously awaiting the pattern!

I nudged a non-knitty friend during the movie and hissed a comment about needing to re-create the sweater for myself. I got looked at with the crazy eye. I’d happily pay if you end up offering a pattern. :)

Are you going to submit your design for publication? I think your nominal fee needn’t be nominal at all if you decide to sell it piece meal… don’t sell yourself and your talents short, you are pretty remarkable and I am sure your design will be as well (I doubt very much that you would put anything sketchy out there…). I am looking forward to seeing your interpretation of the sweater (and I will be more than happy to pay the fee…nominal or not ;) ha!).

  23. Haleyon 16 Jul 2007 at 10:20 pm

can’t wait to see how it turns out. just a thought on color–white with brown and blue (to go with that lovely sock!). happy drawing, planning, shopping and knitting!

a few comments related to earlier posts, i had a strawberry scooter crunch or the Pierre’s equivalent. thanks for inspiring me to revisit a favorite treat! also, did you ever find a good book to read? i’m looking for a new one to read.

  25. Ashleyon 16 Jul 2007 at 10:54 pm

Ok, now that I’ve just come back from seeing it: I love the brown/tan palette in the original, but I think throwing some robin’s egg in there would be awesome.

Also, after you finish this, could you also whip up some patterns for Hermione’s house hoodie and Luna’s chunky blue cardigan? Thanks :)

  26. Miaon 17 Jul 2007 at 4:54 pm

I have used Aurora 8 before. I like the colors int he photos. And I am not a huge fan of brown.

  27. Rachelon 17 Jul 2007 at 10:48 pm

Oh goody. I love it when I think of something I’d like to do, and then I think, “wow, that would be a lot of work and I’m terribly lazy,” and then someone else does it for me! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I’m also glad to know you have such an engrossing project that you are enjoying so much.

  28. Jessicaon 18 Jul 2007 at 8:41 am

Awesome! I can’t wait to see where you go with this. Nothing like some good inspiration to get you started down the path to serious knitting fun. :)

  29. Amandaon 19 Jul 2007 at 12:18 pm

How cool - I love the pattern on the original sweater - the way it emulates a full moon (or lots of them) over rolling hills - and the idea of little wands along the lower edge. Yup, this will definitely be one to swatch for perfection, but it’s going to be fabulous when it all comes together. And thanks for letting us know in advance that you’ll be sharing - because I totally want one!
