i must record this for posterity

Published by Mintyfresh at 10:23 pm under life, new york

My first bona-fide celebrity sighting since I’ve lived in New York! Claire Danes, who came into the restaurant where I was eating dinner with friends, down in SoHo, and sat at the next table with several friends. She looked exactly as you’d expect her to, if you’ve seen a photo of her in the last few years. Her hair was long and kinda scraggly. No photo; there was no way to do it subtly.

Then, on the subway, this guy sat next to me.

direct from the factory floor?

And someone leaned over to ask him if his jacket was handcrafted (yes) and by whom: “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” The guy who asked gave this half shrug, half ‘come on,’ and got an answer:

Andy Warhol.

Hmmmm.

My New York celebrity sightings are limited to Jeanne Garofalo (by the Tower up at Lincoln Center) and several “run ins” with Sarah Jessica Parker, which did not thrill me as much at the time (before I got into Sex and the City) as they would now. Oh yeah, and Dr. Ruth (when I worked at Lincoln Center — she came up to my window in the box office and was really nice. She’s _very_ short).

Andy Warhol? I doubt it. Lots of modern art chez minty these days!

If I had a jacket made by Andy Warhol, I’d never wash it, either.
Then again, I’d never wear it.

Woot for your first celebrity sighting! I’d be looking for the Johns from They Might Be Giants.

That is one fugaly jean jacket. And while having never been in NY to experience the celebrity sighting there, I did sight both Jimmy Fallon and Michael Stipe in Athens, GA. Many a sighting of Michael S., since, you know, he has a house there and all. He loves Target.

yup, I wear priceless (and ugly) artwork in the subway all the time.

I love that coat. But then I love Warhol, irrationally probably!

Years ago, I stood near Meryl Streep in the line for the loo at a Lilith Fair concert. I wanted to photograph the moment, but it would have been awkward on so many levels.

I guess I’ll just be showing my age and not showing off if I tell that I used to occasionally wait on Andy Warhol at the restaurant I worked at in the Village when I first moved to NYC in the late ’70s.

I saw Claire Danes at the restaurant where I work - if I recall she ordered a salad and a pasta. I really like that jacket, actually, but if it were mine I’d plaster it with a sign that said “made by Andy Warhol”

So cool! I bet you felt like a real New Yorker.

I sat next to the one of the Temptations on a plane once.

I found a way to take a picture of Alan Alda, is all I’m saying. (although honestly I think he’s more worth making a photographic ass of yourself over than Claire Danes. Nothing against Claire Danes–she’s just no Alan Alda.)

I’m not sure I do believe him.

    :)

Wow, cool! A celebrity sighting. And she seems like a cool celebrity too :) Yeah, I am not sure I believe that guy on that jacket either… but who knows. It is kind of fugly.

The first time I went to NYC (the big sixth grade field trip in the very distant past) we saw both Peter Falk (Columbo) and Col. Klink (who’s real name escapes me). Col. Klink actually walked a ways with the group and chatted with some of the kids. I’ve been to NYC a variety of times after that and never saw another celebrity! Go figure.

That is so cool (especially the Warhol jacket, if it’s true). Your blog really has become a bit of an argument for living in NY recently. :)
