Sorry about that. How about I just say that I like to give a person a chance to really get used to the new number, try it out, and settle into life at that age before hitting her with a big loud "happy birthday!" Who can handle that kind of stress during a time of transition? Okay, seriously, I hope you had a nice celebration in spite of other things going on in your life.
