My stash isn't large enough for me to forget about its contents. I also buy sweater-quantities for specific projects only, so again, it is rare that I forget. I do have a needle inventory spreadsheet. It has yet to be useful, but I have been diligent with keeping it up. On the other hand, it'd be much easier to carry a spreadsheet around than my computer, if I'm ever at the yarn store and need to remember what I have.
